Popular streaming platform Netflix has added an interesting script in its film line-up — The Pope will chronicle the transition between Pope Benedict XVI and current pontiff Pope Francis. It will explore the shocking resignation of Benedict in 2013 and the power transmission to Francis. Jonathan Pryce, who played the High Sparrow in Game of Thrones, will play Francis, while Anthony Hopkins will portray Benedict.
It will be directed by Fernando Meirelles, while Anthony McCarten will adapt his own stage play into a script. Produced Dan Lin, Jonathan Eirich, and Tracey Seaward; The Pope is set to begin filming in November in Argentina.
This will be a first Netflix original based on the Vatican City. It has previously aired two fictions - Call Me Francis; We Have a Pope. It streamed the documentary Soldiers of the Pope.
